Ethiopia and Eritrea: A War That Should Never Happen

The Horn of Africa has been a region plagued by conflicts for decades, and now, tensions are rising once again between Ethiopia and Eritrea. The signs are alarming: the drums of war are being beaten by the autocratic Eritrean government, which has neither held elections nor established a functioning justice system or parliament for nearly 35 years. However, this war is neither necessary nor beneficial to the people of the region. Instead, it threatens to worsen the already dire humanitarian crisis and deepen instability in the Horn of Africa. With poverty, displacement, and hunger already rampant, the escalation of hostilities would be nothing short of catastrophic.

The Role of Eritrea in Fuelling Conflict

Eritrea’s government, led by President Isaias Afwerki, has long been known for its authoritarian rule. It has been accused of suppressing basic human rights, silencing opposition, and conscripting citizens into indefinite military service. Now, it appears to be actively supporting armed groups to destabilize Ethiopia and provoke widespread unrest.

One of the key groups receiving Eritrean support is the Fanno militia, an armed movement opposing the Ethiopian government, accused of carrying out attacks on civilians and infrastructure. The Eritrean regime is also reportedly aiding the Tigray Defence Force (TDF), which remains illegal under Ethiopian law. The TDF was involved in a deadly and prolonged conflict that recently ended in a fragile peace agreement. By backing these groups, Eritrea is directly interfering in Ethiopia’s internal affairs, escalating tensions, and increasing the risk of a devastating war.

This interference not only undermines Ethiopia’s sovereignty but also stokes ethnic divisions and revives dormant conflicts that threaten to erupt again. Eritrea’s actions are not those of a neighbour seeking peace, but of a regime intent on regional destabilization for political leverage.

The Suffering of the People in the Horn of Africa

The Horn of Africa is already in crisis. Multiple wars, from Ethiopia’s own internal conflicts to Somalia’s ongoing battles with insurgents, have left millions displaced, impoverished, and struggling to survive. A war between Ethiopia and Eritrea will only add to the suffering of the region’s people. Resources that should be directed toward health, education, and food security will instead be funnelled into weapons and military operations.

For decades, millions in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, and Sudan have lived under extreme hardship due to war, drought, and economic instability. Many families rely on humanitarian aid to meet basic needs, while others have been forced to flee their homes entirely. Instead of focusing on development, education, and healthcare, governments in the region continue to invest in conflict and militarization. A new war will further devastate communities, drive more people into refugee camps, and increase the risk of famine and disease.

Children are particularly vulnerable in such conditions. With schools turned into military bases and hospitals running out of supplies, the long-term impact of renewed conflict on the next generation will be immeasurable. Moreover, a war would not remain confined to national borders; it would draw in neighbouring countries, risk creating a regional war zone, and severely hinder peace-building efforts.

The Urgent Need for International Action

The international community cannot afford to ignore these developments. Immediate diplomatic intervention is necessary to prevent further bloodshed. Regional stability in the Horn of Africa has global implications, especially in terms of migration, terrorism, and economic security.

These efforts should also include supporting grassroots peace initiatives, empowering civil society, and holding accountable those responsible for inciting violence. Only through a multifaceted and committed global response can this impending disaster be averted.

The African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) must pressure Eritrea to stop supporting armed groups in Ethiopia and push for a peaceful resolution.

Countries with influence in the region, including the United States, European Union, and China, must take a firm stance against Eritrea’s destabilizing actions. Economic sanctions and diplomatic isolation should be considered against those fuelling the conflict.

A strong push for political dialogue between all parties in Ethiopia and Eritrea is crucial to prevent further escalation. International humanitarian organizations must prepare for potential refugee crises and food shortages that could arise if conflict resumes.

A Call for Peace

The people of Ethiopia and Eritrea do not want another war. They want peace, stability, and the opportunity to build better lives for their families. War benefits only a handful of political and military elites, while millions of innocent people suffer. It is time for leaders in the region and the global community to act responsibly, ensuring that war is avoided and that peace prevails.

Ordinary citizens have suffered enough. Farmers want to till their land, children want to return to school, and communities want to heal and rebuild. Yet these simple dreams remain out of reach as long as conflict looms over the region. It is incumbent upon all who care about justice, peace, and human dignity to speak out and take action.

The Horn of Africa has suffered enough. Let’s not allow another devastating conflict to unfold. The time to act is now. There is still a chance to stop this war before it begins — but only if we act with urgency, clarity, and resolve.
